What are Talking Therapies?

We often find it helpful to talk problems through with a friend or family member, but sometimes friends and family cannot help us and we need to talk to a professional.

Talking Therapies involve talking to someone who is trained to help you deal with your negative feelings. They can help anyone who is experiencing distress.

Counselling and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) are forms of Talking Therapies.

What is cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT)?

CBT is a form of talking therapy that combines cognitive therapy and behaviour therapy. It focuses on how you think about the things going on in your life – your thoughts, images, beliefs and attitudes (your cognitive processes) – and how these impact on the way you behave and deal with emotional problems. It then looks at how you can change any negative patterns of thinking or behaviour that may be causing you difficulties. In turn, this can change the way you feel.

What type of problems can CBT help with?

CBT can be an effective therapy for a number of problems:

  • Anger management
  • Anxiety and panic attacks
  • Chronic pain
  • Depression
  • General health problems
  • Habits, such as facial tics
  • Mood swings
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Phobias
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Relationship problems
  • Sleep problems

CBT does not claim to be able to cure all problems listed. For example, it does not claim to be able to cure chronic pain. Rather, CBT might help someone with arthritis to find new ways of coping while living with that disorder.

What is Counselling used for?

Counselling can be used to treat many different health conditions including:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Borderline personality disorder
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Long-term illnesses

Counselling aims to help you deal with and overcome issues that are causing pain or making you feel uncomfortable.

It can provide a safe and regular space for you to talk and explore difficult feelings. A counsellor will not usually give advice, but will help you to find your own insight and understanding of your problems.

Counselling can help you to:

  • Cope with a bereavement or relationship breakdown
  • Cope with redundancy or work-related stress
  • Explore issues such as sexual identity
  • Deal with issues that are preventing you from achieving your ambitions
  • Deal with feelings of depression or sadness, and have more positive outlook on life

Counselling can often involve talking about difficult or painful feelings and, as you begin to face them, you may feel worse in some ways. However, with the help and support of your therapist, you should gradually start to feel better.

In most cases, it takes a number of sessions before the counselling starts to make a difference, and a regular commitment is required to make the best use of the therapy.
